What is the name of your state? California
If I am legally separated, will I be financially responsible for any bills accumulated after the separation date?
My response:
In California, any bills you incur for yourself, post legal separation, are your sole and separate responsibility. Both of you are still responsible for Community Property debts; e.g., mortgage payments, credit card bills, etc. unless a division of assets and liabilities has clearly been specified in your Settlement Agreement.
Be aware, if either of you defaults on a debt created during the marriage, and despite your Settlement Agreement, the other person remains on the hook for the total debt. Your creditors are NOT parties to your Settlement Agreement, and can go after either or both of you for the defaulted debts.
