What is the name of your state? CA

Couple of questions about schedule C deductions for my sole proprietorship operated out of a home office:

(1) I took a training course sponsored by the local Small Business Administration. Is this deductible, and if so, where?

(2) Long Distance service: I pay a flat rate of $50/month for all local and long distance service. There is only one phone line, and it is shared with home (personal) use. The business use accounts for approximately 90% of the usage. Instructions for line 25 on Sch. C state that I can only deduct the cost of a second phone line. Is there any way I can deduct this phone expense anywhere else?

Thanks very much in advance!

1. Yes. Call it a seminar in the Other Deductions section.
2. You can deduct long distance. However, with a flat fee, you'll have a hard time figuring out how much was long distance. BUT, the IRS has to allow you a reasonable deduction if you can prove you have long distance expenses, so figure how much you'd pay for local service, call the rest long distance, and take a percentage of that. Then bury it as an office expense.
