What is the name of your state? NC

I was charged for "doctor shopping", I haven't been convicted yet. I'm having a huge problem finding a lawyer - I've been to 6 soon far and they all have told me something different. I just need to find someone to answer some basic questions -
-
-Will the prosecutor go out and find negative info on me?

-Does my lawyer have to share ALL info with the prosecutor and vice versa (we are at District court level and I haven't had my first court date yet)?

-I did this for a reason (surgery gone really bad), yet no one wants to mention this, they want me to plead guilty and be charged with a felony or misdemenor. Why? Laziness?

- I was told the prosecutor "may" have info on me, therefore the ball is in her hand, much like russian roulette. True?

-Will the cop who investigated me give the entire file to the prosecutor? I was told yes, no and maybe. Please HELP!!

Hi Girlnextdoor: Can't answer your questions, but here's a
good URL (long one) on the problem and what's being
done by the DEA to try to curtail it.

"Doctor Shopping" is a term used when someone goes from doctor to doctor seeking controlled substances.

What does that have to do with "surgery gone really bad?"

I'll take a shot at that question. It’s probably got something to do with the fact that after surgery -- if there's a painful incision -- opiods (AKA narcotics) are the drugs most frequently prescribed for pain control. If it was a "surgery gone bad", it's possible that a lot of pain meds were prescribed, and if the patient has developed a tolerance to the medication and starts to withdrawal, the patient sometimes goes doctor hopping to get their fix fraudulently instead of weaning off the drug.

The drugs most frequently used to control pain are morphine (injectable, oral, and patches), Demerol, Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, Darvocet -- and there‘s a few others, too, but those are the most frequently abused. The patient who is doctor hopping usually doesn’t appreciate the very very close tabs being kept on those controlled substances and how quick they’re going to get caught. If the doctor and/or pharmacist is found to have either negligently or willfully prescribed and dispensed a narocotic, their a** is grass, too.

Hmmbrzz is correct. My surgery was a mess, the doc said I was "cured" and I had chronic pain, so I took matters in my own hands. I had another surgery which corrected the problem. However, I'm facing criminal charges for my wrong doings (aka Doctor shopping). I've spoke to 7 lawyers and have gotten 8 different answers. It doesn't seem to matter why I did what I did. I did it, I'm guilty and that's final. Plus I get differernt answers to the most basic of questions. I don't need an addiction specialist, I need good advice and an even better lawyer. Suggestions anyone?

Regardless of the reason you did it, you went doctor shopping to obtain narcotics. It seems to me that you are now lawyer shopping trying to get one who will tell you what you want to hear. Settle on the one who seems most competent and follow the advice you are given.

Yes, the prosecutor will obtain the file containing all of your arrest information. Yes, the prosecutor will look into your background.

My response: I'm an RN. You definitely need an attorney. I've worked psychiatric nursing and substance abuse (and have seen many doctor hoppers). Besides getting an attorney, you need to get yourself into rehab immediately. That is the best thing you can do for yourself right now for your future legal proceedings (and they are coming). Talk to the rehab staff about getting legal counsel. I don't know what drug you were hopping for or how much you hopped (hopefully not for Oxy), but if it was something like Percocet, Vicodin, or Darvcet, you're still in some big trouble. Get to rehab. Call them now. If you don't have money or insurance, go the ER and tell them you're addicted and need help.
