What is the name of your state? NY

I have a small business which has some cash income.

I am in a feud with a family member who has now threatened as a blackmail tactic to go to Uncle Sam to investigate me.

How real is a threat like this? How often does the govt. go after small business on the basis of a report from someone with a vendetta against another person?

Couldn't I , theoretically, just report all my enemies or hold that threat over anyone's head to get them to do what I want? (no one wants to go through an audit!)

*** Obviously, since we don't know the other person.... you are in a much better position to know whether to take this threat seriously or not.

"How often does the govt. go after small business on the basis of a report from someone with a vendetta against another person?"
*** One family member 'spilling the beans' on another is a very common way for the IRS (or any other investigator) to get good, prime, solid information on criminal activity. Done all the time. And if the amount is enough... and the crime serious enough, the agency can and will pursue to find out if there is any validity to the report.

"Couldn't I , theoretically, just report all my enemies or hold that threat over anyone's head to get them to do what I want? (no one wants to go through an audit!)"
*** There is a huge difference here.... we assume that all those that you threaten have nothing to hide. In fact, the only person that would really be concerned about what might be 'discovered' is the person who DOES has something to hide. So, what are you hiding???

I have nothing to hide, however, my books could be in better shape (I'm not that organized) and any kind of audit will be very stressful even though there is nothing for them to find.

So, in other words, I can throw anyone's life I want into a tizzy digging up receipts, records, etc. just for fun and spite!

What a waste of irs resources....

*** No.

The Social Security Administration (SSA), Office of the Inspector General (OIG), Fraud Hotline provides an avenue for reporting fraud, waste, and abuse within SSA's programs and operations. The Fraud Hotline receives allegations by telephone, regular mail, facsimile, and electronic mail. Allegations received at the Fraud Hotline are carefully reviewed to determine the most appropriate course of action.

The OIG is an independent law enforcement agency mandated to investigate fraud in SSA programs. Our specialists are trained to take reports regarding allegations of fraud, waste and abuse within Social Security programs and operations. We cannot assist you or intervene in applications for benefits currently pending before SSA. If you have been denied benefits you should use the appellate process provided with your denial notice for contesting that denial. The fact that you have been denied benefits is not the basis for a fraud allegation unless one of the criminal acts listed below is involved.

Information on reporting can be found at:
http://www.ssa.gov/oig/guidelin.htm

The reason I ask is that I know of somebody who has collected benefits in the current amount of 40,000 dollars at this time.

My question is will that person have to serve time?

No, it is not me or my immediate family.

"My question is will that person have to serve time? "
*** No one can answer that question. If found guilty of SS fraud, the person would be subject to fine and/or confinement, but the determination of how much of each, if any, is purely up to the court.

What type of criminal offense would be put on her record?

"What type of criminal offense would be put on her record?"
*** After investigation, there could be one (or more) of several possible charges. Curious though... why would that make any difference??
If you are aware of a crime, report the facts as you know them and let the investigators and prosecutors determine what actions (or charges).

I found the ex to be cheating SS and I want to know what would be put on her record to help me with custody. It's an ammunition thing.

The information has been forwarded to SS investigations via e-mail.
