What is the name of your state? ca - my brother's ex-wife's new husband wants to adopt their son. my brother agrees. she wants us to pay for it. we have agreed but need to know approximate cost and what the steps are. my brother is moving to mn where i live. will he need to go back to ca to go to court?

The husband will have to file a petition to adopt. He will have to pass a background check and home study. Your brother will be asked to consent to the adoption. He will not have to appear in court.

Attorney fees vary, but you can find out what the state charges for the home study and the court filing costs. In our stepparent adoption in Indiana, the total was close to $1500.
