My fiance is concerned about inheriting his father's debt. We are getting married next year, and I have close to $100,000 in assets in my name. If his father is to pass away, will we be responsible for repaying his debt? And if so, is there some way to proactively protect my assets from having to repay this debt?
thanks for any advice- Jackie

My response:

No. An heir only inherits assets, not debts. The only time you would be "responsible" is if you were the executor of the Estate of your father, and you were required by the requirements of the Will, or court order, to pay the debts from money in the Estate - - ONLY - - NOT OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET.
