John was hitch hiking. Fred picked him up. Fred said he was to tired to drive, so John drove. The police pulled them over and found massive amounts of marijuana hidden. John had no idea that it was there. Will John be charged? What would the charges be if it was transported across state lines?

Just out of curiosity-I told a friend that if he was riding in a car and the person had drugs on them, and the got pulled over, all parties involved would be charged with possession. I am not sure if this is true. Is it?
