What is the name of your state? TX
No, we're not saying we don't want to pay taxes. The problem is that a constitutional amendment changed the way counties in TX handle the appraisals. The city, county and school boards appoint a board to handle the tax appraisals. Naturally the higher the appraisals, the higher the tax they can collect. There is little recourse except to challenge the appraisal each year. The appraisal board is appointed, not elected. When the tax appraisal is challenged (as I did last year), it can go before the board - each individual goes in alone with numerous people from the board in front of him (a daunting task for the average citizen) and has 15 minutes to make his case. Because of the way Texas handles constitutional amendments, the challenge in court to change this process is the better way for citizens to go. We want a board that is answerable to the citizens - not to the entities that appoint them - and the incentive to keep property taxes as high as possible to please those that appoint them.
