how does one know if/when they ARE divorced?

if one person leaves the other (not even a "dear john" letter) and has been gone for over a year - how do they know when/if they ARE divorced, if at all?

When a person files for a divorce, the petitioner must provide notice to the other party and allow them to opportunity to respond. If you have never received such notice, chances are you are not divorced.
