what are the rules and procedures for serving a major corporation headquartered in another state but doing business in my state e.g. Ford Motor Corp. Can you serve the dealer?

contact the New York Secretary of State office. Ask for the name of Ford's agent for service of process. Ford will have an agent who accepts service of legal documents somewhere in New York, most likely in NY City.

*** If your complaint and suit is against THAT dealer, then you can serve the dealer (likely a corporation) by service on the agent for the corporation that owns the dealership.

However, if you are suing the manufacturer (Ford Motor Company) you have to serve one the agent for THAT corporation.
