What is the name of your state? iowa

i am wanting to start my own photo restoration business. i am not a photographer but have found i have enjoy doing this and i am good at it. what i need to know is how can i tell if i am infringing on anyones copyrights? i know that if the professional pictures are over 50 years old i am probably ok but i need to know what i can do to a photo. i love colorizing old photos, can i do this to an old photo and not break the law? and if i colorize an old photo that is out of copyright can i sell it or reproduce it? thanks. jerussha

My response:

If the photo is yours; i.e., you paid for it, or the photo belongs to a customer; i.e., they paid for it, then you can do anything you want, or the customer wants, to the photo.

My response:

You're welcome. Also, if you have to make new negatives from the photos, just remember to place into your contract that the negatives belong to you, and NOT the customer.
