What is the name of your state?Louisiana
Our son is presently 17 and had considered to join the US Marines/Reserves after his 18th birthday in July. Our son went through the process of going to New Orleans and taking a physical and other screenings. His recruiter had assigned him a job classification and scheduled him to attend boot camp in San Diego, California. As parents, we do recall that we signed a permission slip for him to go to New Orleans, but, we do NOT recall signing a permission slip for him to enlist into the Marines. He was scheduled to go to boot camp after he turned 18. His birthday is July 20,2004 and he was scheduled to go on July 26,2004. The beginning of May, our son decided not to join the Marines and wants to attend a four year college. He informed his recruiter of this at that time and asked him to take him off the list of recruits. On June 23, his recuiter contacted our son and told him their was another job opening and that he could leave for boot camp in Paris Island, South Carolina this coming Monday. He was shocked that he was still in their system and concerned that they will force him into military duty. We as parents decided, to send a registered letter to his recuiting office revocating our parental consent( if in fact their was one on file) to allow our son to join the Marines. Is their anything else we can do to assure that our son will not be suprised on July 26 after he is 18 and sent to boot camp? Should our son send a written statement to the fact that he has no intention to join? We have heard horror stories of young adults sent into the armed forces because they did not do things properly. We want to put an end to this military situation and focus on his future in college. Please advise/ many thanks from SW Louisiana
