Not sure how to proceed? We recently had a 17 year old family member move in with us after the self-inflicted death of her father. She chose to leave her mother and home and live with us (we are 250 miles from her home). My question is . . . does her living under our roof make us legal guardians or do we have to file something with the courts? She will be 18 in December.

She will be receiving social security benefits, we have set her up an account at the local bank and her checks will be direct deposited in her name. She will need to complete her senior year and will be with us all year.

There are other family members trying to dictate her life, and she is struggling with her new found freedom. She is a great girl and our only interest in taking her in is to give her a safe place to live and see she finishes her education, her money is just that - her money, we will provide shelter, food and all other life expenses, she is responsible for her orthodontics and clothes and spending money. She is very responsible and wants to save for a car and insurance.

Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you

Her parents are still her legal guardians. You have no legal say over anything about this girl until mom and dad say you do (or a court does). Be careful as this can bit ewoyu if mom and dad are against your having any control over her.
