I thought it was against federal law for anyone to be forced to join a union?

I know you would still have to pay dues, but what right does a union in Illinois have to force me to join?

No, it is not against Federal law. In SOME states, it is against STATE law.

That is what is meant by a "right to work" state. In a right to work state, you cannot be forced to join a union in order to get work. If you are not in a right to work state, then you CAN be so forced.

Unfortunately, Illinois is NOT a "right to work" state. So if you want to remain on that job and they are demanding union membership, you will have to join the union.
