North Carolina...

I signed a fee agreement in a workers comp case. A week later I decided to drop the lawyer. At the time he had not gotten around to doing anything....not even requesting any med/employment/comp records. Will he still be able to claim 30% of my settlement? I assume he cannot and can only bill me for the initial consultation. (He had not contacted anyone and none of the parties involved knew i even had a lawyer). Am I correct? Please advise so I know how to proceed.
