What is the name of your state? Michigan

I have an uncle who is 44 years old he was labled mentally retarded when he was in grade school. HOwever, his parents never felt the need to apply for SSI when he was a child, he is now having a hard time, and needs extra support. Are we still able to apply for SSI?

It is possible depending on what records exist and what his IQ was and level of functioning, there are some sepcial requiremnets. I suggest taking him to your local Independent living resource center and ask for help applying for social security before making application so you have all your ducks in a row, they are experienced or can refer you to locally.
