What is the name of your state? California

My daughter started having a strange rash on 9/01/04. She had previously had a similar type rash that the doctor had prescribed bactroban ointment. I used the ointment but by the next day the spots were spreading and getting larger. I made an appointment with her pediatrician who told us she had most likely gotten bitten by a bug and was having a reaction to the bug bite. A few days later the spots were continuing to spread and get larger. I called the doctor again and was given an appointment with another doctor in the office who diagnosed it as chicken pox. A week later, the sores are still spreading and I called for another appointment and was told my daughter did not have chicken pox but had hot tub foliculitus (even though she has not been in a hot tub). A culture was done on that visit. The next day her pediatrician wanted to see her again and said that she was having bug bites and was reacting to them. I was told to go home and clean my house real good. I told them that my house was clean, we do not have bugs in the house. Two days later Grossmont Hospital called and reported that the skin culture had grown a rare bacteria (pseudomonas) and that my daughter needed to be on an antibiotic. The antibiotic was started on 9/20/04 and she tood it for ten days. She saw the pediatrician on 9/30/04. On 10/04/04 my daughter started breaking out with the sores again. I called my daughters pediatricians office and requested a referral to an Invectious Disease Specialist. The office told me they would have the doctor call me back in two days (she was out of the office). On 10/07 04 the doctor called and we received the referral, but the specialist cannot she our daughter until 10/18/04. Everyday she breaks out in fresh sores (some being the size of a quarter). Is there a possible medical malpractice going on here?

Thanks!

Skin rashes are notoriously difficult to diagnose. Even dermatologists have problems at times.

Pseudomonas is the organism that causes "hot tub folliculitis". You do not have to be in a hot tub to get this. You may want to dispose of any bathtub sponges or other absorbant accessories used in the child's bath or wash them in chlorine. The condition will usually eventually go away without treatment. Antibiotics may help but may cause a "rebound" effect upon discontinuation.

While it might be nice if your physicians were a bit faster to respond, there is no legal malpractice happening here. Go see the infectious disease specialist. All should be well in the end.
