What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? California

Hi, I have been doing all the paperwork for my divorce on my own (In pro per) till now. But I want to engage an attorney now. I have randomly taken appointments with a few lawyers in the area from the telephone directory. But I am nervous about putting my money in the hands of an unknown attorney X,Y,Z. Is there any 'objective' way one could find out who is a competent attorney with how many wins/losses behind them or their length of experince rather than proceeding randomly to engage one ???
I would be grateful for any help in this matter.

My response:

You call the Los Angeles County Bar Association and ask for a referral to a Family Law specialist. These particular attorneys are on a panel of attorneys with the Bar Association because they have all demonstrated a high degree of knowledge and have passed the specialty requirements to be placed on the Bar panel. Be aware that because they are "specialized" and have met the requirements of the higher educated needed and required, and due to their expertise, you will be charged more than the average, non-panel family law attorney. So, expect to pay a $5,000.00 retainer against a $275 to $325 per hour hourly fee.

Good luck.
