Arizona question of an MP being deployed to Iraq...

If a soldier is the only son and sole survivor to carry on the family name, can he be deployed to Iraq?

Does the "fortunate son" law not apply because he technically volunteered to serve in the Army National Guard??

Thank you for any clarification and help.

Yes it's legal. The "only surviving son" rules were abolished during the Korean conflict. I wish him well, Iraq is not a nice place to be right now.

He can appeal the decision, but not all that many are getting approved. The only son thing won't help unless you go through your congressman. Even then, it won't do much good right about now. Only serious hardship cases are being considered or reviewed.
