replacement corner lenses on my car

What is the name of your state? NJ
I recently purchased a pair of clear corner lenses for my car but have not installed them yet. I was told that in NJ all lenses on the car have to have a DOT number on them or I could face a ticket. My lenses were made in taiwan and of course have no such numbers. Is this a real law in NJ or was the guy that told me blowing smoke?
