What is the name of your state? NC

I recently went to work with a company in direct competition with a previous employer. I was sent a letter today. Asking that I quit because I was causing harm to my previous employer. There are no trade secrets involved. No non-compete. Nothing. I know I will need to see a laywer, but how can they stop me from working somewhere else.
