I have been told (probably incorrectly) that if one attempts to remove snow and ice from their steps and sidewalks and a delivery person injures themselves then the homeowner and their insurance co is liable. While if no attempt to remove snow and ice is made, the homeowner is off the hook. What is the straight story on snow and ice removal?

"Negligently" removing snow and ice from your steps, as well as "negligently" failing to remove snow and ice from your steps, can be grounds for liability.

Meaning, if you have 4' wide steps, and you clear a perfect 2' wide swath up the stairs and some dumbass falls on the still-snowy part, you're off the hook.
