Hi

I'd be very grateful if someone reading this board can help me with some advice and maybe some suggestions for sources of further information.

I have a friend who has been living in the US for around ten years with her husband, and has two children born here. They have green cards, own a home and plan to become citizens.

Recently, their marriage has been in difficulties and it seems that they may separate. This would mean that my friend would need to apply for citizenship independently of her former husband and she is very frightened by the prospect.

Unfortunately, my friend suffered a serious brain injury in a car crash in which she lost an eye. Since the accident, she has problems with concentration and memory and is quite incapable of memorising large quantities of information. She is convinced that she cannot pass the citizenship exam as a result of this problem.

Her injuries are very real and have already been investigated and documented by US doctors for a UK court case arising from the accident. She was awarded substantial damages against the other driver.

As a result, my friend is a financially independent woman who is more than capable of caring for herself and her children in every way.

My questions are:
Does the US government offer any assistance or a less demanding procedure to people with a disability like my friend?

If so, where can I go to find more information?

Are there any organisations/charities who might be able to support my friend with advice?

Are there any lawyers who specialise in this area?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any advice you can offer will be very much appreciated.

Please email me as well as posting here.

Hi Val, thanks for your reply.

Yes, she has a social security number.

Are you saying that permanent resident status may be easier to obtain than citizenship? I'm not familiar with the difference between the two (I'm from the UK living in the US temporarily, so this is all new to me). Do you know where she can get more information on this?

Dear Mis;
I know of 3 avenues of help for her 1.By going to the local Social Security and applying for SSI 2.By going to the Local Welfare and taking to a social worker there
and By going to her local Legal Advice office, most towns, and cities have one.
I hope this helps.
