Hey, I'm a 17 year old and I like in Kentwood, Michigan. I was with my girlfriend in a park with no one there in the parking lot but us. We were in the back seat kissing when a police officer tapped on the window and asked us to step out of the car. The officer asked for ID and we provided it, and the officer told us it was "just a warning this time." The police officer then threatened to call our parents and told us to leave the park. She then escorted us out of the park and followed us to make sure we would not just come back. I guess what I am wondering is did the officer have the right to do what she did, did we have the right to kiss in the car, and what kind of punishment could we have recieved for doing this. Also, is the officer allowed to threaten to call our parents? Are they allowed to target teens in this way? I have seen adults kissing in public all the time. Should this happen again, how should I handle it? What rights do I have and how do I protect them?

Like, oh my god, I can't believe they did that to you!

If it were me, the next time that happens, you make sure you tell the cop straight to his (or her) face that you know your rights and that as a American citizen (you are one, right?) that they can't harass you and following you out of the park is age discrimination and if they ever stop you from kissing your girlfriend again you'll sue them for every penny they got!

I bet they'll leave you alone after you show them!!!

I suggest you discuss this with your parents and see if they want to bring any complaint against the officer, as a minor, your parents are responsible for you and would have to be a part of any complaint. :)

The answer to your question is YES. The officer had every right to stop you, whether 17 or 27 and depending on the time of day or night, every right to give you a citation for loitering.

Next time, fine a safe, private place to cop a feel.

What time was this, and what time does the park close? If you were there after hours, that might be the basis for the officer's actions.

Of course, there might be other reasons. By the way, who's your daddy?
