any way to find out

FL

i am involved in the same type of situation. Call the post/base locator of the base where the person was stationed. They should direct you to the unit. Call the unit, find the first sgt or the commander. Privacy act may keep them from giving information from anyone except next of kin, but you may find a compassionate soul who will tell you something. I did. Try calling the unit chaplain. Try the military police and ask the same question. Knowing the SSN is very helpful. Also National Deserters Hotline at Fort Knox can give you some info once a packet reaches them, which can take weeks or months. KEEP trying...you eventually will get some info.
