Subject: deed replacement

My grandparents have offered to give me a piece of land they own in NJ.
However, they can not locate the deed. I have 2 ?'s.
1. How can I get a new deed for the property?
2. There are taxes owing on the land. Will this hinder the transfer of ownership?
What do I need to do in this case?

thanks for the help.

Hi Audie. Go to or contact the county recorders office
to get a copy of the deed. Many title companies can do
that for you also. If there are taxes owing on the property,
the transfer of ownership should not really be a problem, but
you should look into that also. Again, the county recorders
office or a title company may be able to tell you what
to do in your case.

The taxes will have to be paid first, before a free and clear title can be issued.
