Is it possible for an individual to handle the transfer of a land deed in NC. If so, what is the procedure?

This answer absolutely depends on state law. Some states require an attorney to handle all real estate matters; some don't. I am not familiar with NC law and would suggest that you go to the local county assessor's office or wherever deeds are recorded and ask one of the clerk's there. You could also call a local real estate broker for advice.
