Tenants rights against contractor

I rent a house in a suburb of Chicago, IL. The owner has contracted work
done on the house. The contractor has done a terrible job and has left the
house in what I feel is an unsafe condition.
Faulty electrical work, broken glass and nails blowing off the roof, etc.
My question is "as a tenant do I have any legal rights against the
contractor?" I believe the contractor to be guilty of reckless disregard,
and since I have a child, child endangerment. Not to mention liable for the
time I've spent cleaning and fixing problems he caused.

Great question. If there was injury or other harm you'd almost certainly have a claim -- unfortunately that's when the damages flow. The bad news is that lousy contractors often have no assets and no insurance and thus don't care. Decide what you want and then go to the landlord.
