My response:

In California, you can't create a "common law" marriage. So, you could live together all of your lives, and neither of you are entitled to the marital protections you would have otherwise had.

However, that doesn't mean the the two of you aren't potentially responsible for one another under a "contract" basis. See Marvin v. Marvin (1976) 18 Cal.3d 660. You also need to explore whether one of you can prove that the other was their "putative spouse". See a local family law attorney for further advice concerning your rights, especially in light of these latter two theories.
