How far back can a potential employer check your job history? I was terminated from a job in 1997 (8 years ago). This is my only termination in 17 years of employment. Can they find this information? Do I have to list this if they ask if I was fired?

Can they find this information? Yes.

Do I have to list this if they ask if I was fired? Unless you want to be disqualified for falsifying your application, yes.
