What is the name of your state? New York

I have been approached by two companies that wish to submit a proposal to fill a contracted position within a state agency. One company wishes me to sign a non-compete requiring that I will not pursue or agree to be bid by another vendor for this same bid. I am not a current employee of this company and I feel that it is intended to eliminate competition and restricts my employment opportunities. I have signed a confidential disclosure agreement. Any thoughts?

You are under no legal obligation to sign any agreement you find objectionable; however, the employer is under no legal obligation to consider you for employment if you refuse.

If you want to know how enforceable this particular agreement is, you'll have to show it to a local attorney. We can't comment on an agreement we haven't read. However, there is nothing inherently illegal about asking you to sign a non-compete.
