Is it legal for a company to deny employment "for a clerical position" on the basis of a credit score?

If i was denied a position, which was a clerical position, due to a "low credit score", (Thats what i was told over the phone when the interviewer called me.), why would the letter from the company that i just received state that they found someone "more qualified" after they had already told me that i was well qualified as i had worked in the same office before. Could there be some reason they don't want to put the first reason on paper???

It's possible that both reasons are true. The other person may be more qualified AND they were unhappy with your credit score.

However, it doesn't matter. It is LEGAL for them to deny you employment on that basis.
