Ok, my name is Ike (again). I guess you have to be able to type 65wpm to be able to create a substantial post without being logged out.

I'll just keep is short.

My girlfriend, who is for many daignoses eligible for SSD, believes that she requires the help of a lawyer in order for anyone to pay attention to her claim appications. I simply disagree. She also believes that a reason why she may be having such a hard time is because she has been a housewife most of her life and has not contributed largely to the SS pool. I think this is absurd.

Can anyone with experiences with the disability claims process please describe them to me, whether it was through a lawyer, or independently?

Thank you,
Ike

You can go to the SSA site to research a lot of information.

What hard time is she having ?
Understanding how to go about the applications, hearings,Etc ? , OR ,
Having a hard time trying to get approved ?

Generally SSA will gather all her medical , including mental health records , if any , and make a determination IF she can preform any substantial Employment that is available in the USA .

My sister started out her claim by herself , but when she was denied the first time she needed an SSI lawyer for the appeals and hearings .

So, sometimes Lawyers are necessary ,yes .

If you research the percentage of first-time claims that are denied/approved for people representing themselves vs. those with attorneys, the answer will be rather clear whether it's a good idea to get one.
