New JerseyI recently began working at an ice cream place by my home. Only being fourteen, this was my first job. I worked there for one day training and was told to come back on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Until today I recieved a phone call saying I was fired because I am lefthanded and had trouble with the ice cream scooper. I thought this to be a very biast reason for being fired, and have me wondering if my rights were violated. I would greatly appreciate anyone with advice to help me in this situation.

Thanks.

Being lefthanded is not prohibited discrimination. Face it, the rest of the world is right handed so most of the equipment will be for right handed people.

Either learn to use it with your left hand, change to your right hand or find something else to do.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with employment discrimination, but from what I do know, being fired because you are unable to handle equipment isn't considered discrimination. Unless you were in some kind of an accident that "magically" caused you to become disabled and use your left hand, it is not discrimination. Here are two links that discuss this issue:

NJ Department of Labor document regarding discrimination at work:

U.S. federal laws regarding employment discrimination:
