What is the name of your state? Arizona

We have 2 acres along the edge of sate land. Houses have been built up on both sides of our property and locals have been over the years gradually starting to use our property to gain access to the state land. They cross our property to gain access to a trail that is really old that they go hiking, biking and horseback riding on. We've had the property close to 18 years now. In the last 10 the trail has started getting used more to the point where it is probably used by someone on a daily bases. We would like to build a house there and fence off the property. What would be the best way to do this? We have been given lots of different kinds of advice such as put certain types of signs, take control of the property one day a year, take pictures, etc. There is no legal right of way, easement or access. So can we just fence it and put no trespassing signs? Understand that we don't just want to try and stop the people walking through but we want to be able to win in court if it ever comes to that. We have heard of other similar cases in and around the city/county of things gone badly and we'd like to do it right.

Thanks for all help in advance!

Unless it's the main access to the State park, most people will honor the barbed wire fence with signs on it. How are they to know who's land it is? Some places there are plots of private mixed up with the gov land. Cross that bridge when you come to it. Be sure to get a survey before you put up the fence or fence it to leave an easement next to the fence line.
