I can't take engineering school anymore! Everyone there is scared of me, and threatens to report me to the dean of engineering because of my AS behaviors which I cannot help. I tried to go to my college's counseling services, but they only made things worse when they wouldn't advocate on my behalf over in engineering! All of the students scream at me that I am a "pathetic *******" and tell me that they want me out of school because they are scared of me! I thought college would be more mature than the horrible high school, which I had to drop out of for the same issues, but it is more of the same! I want out! I don't want to go to school anymore, ever again! I don't want to have a job, ever again, outside of my family! All that will happen is the same thing that happened in school. HELP!!!! PLEASE COMMENT!!!
Due to my environment being extremely hostile, and because I have gone from a 3.7 GPA last semester to < 3.0 this semester, and also because my parents told me that I will never have a job, EVER, I am dropping out of school. I have Asperger's, and everyone has discriminated against me at school. They want to throw me out of school, and now they get their wish. I need some support. Please HELP!!!

this school promised him clinical counseling and support and i think they went back on their promise. is there any advice i can give him?

thanks--jaimie

Jamie,

First, your friend needs to know that there is a job out there for him no matter what anyone says. S/He is in college

Did your friend pay for counseling services that he did not receive?
Will I be charged for AS services at the Clinical Center?
Yes. Students pay for services. A fee brochure will be sent to you as a result of your call to the Clinical Center seeking help.
What are the Asberger behaviors that he cannot control that make your friend think that everyone is afraid of him? He needs to talk to the Liaison Services specialist. I looked over their support services page and it looks impressive, much, much larger than most colleges.

What is described are student to student concerns and need to be addressed through those channels. He can file complaints against other student, but they will also look at your friend's behavior in these events.

Good luck.

Jamie,
Most people don't understand Asperger's syndrome even in programs like engineering where there are a number of high functioning students with Asperger's, which makes it all the more frustrating for the faculity and students alike who must all try to manage their own problems and interact with other people.

The best way to address this problem is to ask for ADA accommodations, this must be done in writing. Then a plan to accommodate your Asperger's will be developed. I can't say what that might be at this point because I don't know you and your friend. It is very important that if your Asperger's is so affecting that you are not able to work or attend school and complete a degree, that you/your friend apply for disability. You may also apply for state rehabiliation services to find employment that you can manage without a lot of stress. Unfortunately, life can be very frustrating if you do not find a good match for your talents in your employment and while you may catch up and learn to adapt by the time you get to college, the constantly changing environment makes maintaining that outside of a supportive environment more and more difficult over time. Asperger's doesn't go away and many medications are not effective.

Your best bet is to find both a mentor and someone to colloborate with in your school and work.
