I recently moved from NY to NJ. I went to
DMV for the test to get my NJ license. They informed me that my current license
was suspended in Alabama & Georgia. In
1985 I was in the Army stationed in GA. I
received a speeding ticket while driving
through AL. I paid that ticket within the week.(Being in the military, I had no choice
but to pay it). AL. claims that it is still unpaid
after 14 years. I have no paperwork from
then. They claim to have their copy of the
summons and thats it. They want me to pay the ticket again=$400 plus a $60
re-instatement fee(for GA. also). I don't
think I should be ripped off after 14 years
due to poor record keeping. Any help?
Thank you!

It's hard to believe that this has come up so late and you'd not been told before. No suggestions but maybe the bank has copies of old checks. It may be cheaper to pay the *******s than fight city hall, especially if ou need a new license.

If the bank doesn't have records of that paid ticket, check your old bankbooks. Any proof at all on your part will save you $460.
There is a record of your payment somewhere... if you paid by money order or had to deal with JAG at all, they will have records as well.
I wish you luck.
