What is the name of your state? Iowa

We recently received a letter from the DNR about our spetic tanks in town. The town had complained about the tanks. We bought the home in 2000, but have lived in the house since 1986. They now tell us that we HAVE to hook up to the city sewer. The tanks were full recently and we had them emptied. But we can not afford the $5000.00 that is going to take to hook up to the town sewer.

What are our options?

unless your city or town has already in place a older ordinance allowing private wells or private septic systems to remain in use untill one or the other fails, then you will have to see if what any other ordinance says about mandated hook up and follow it. ALso you can ask if they have any financial assistance available to you such as spreading the cost out over a number of years on your property taxes.
