What is the name of your state? North Carolina

After 5 1/2 years of marriage, my husband decided he did not want to be married anymore. I filed legal separation papers on November 5, 2004. We have no children and all of our property and accounts have been settled. I thought we had to wait 1 year (November 2005) before we could get divorced but my ex called yesterday and said that he had heard we could sign an affidavit and get divorced sooner. We are both in agreement with this if we can? Has anyone ever heard of doing this?
