Nearly 20 years ago the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground. A leak in the hull allowed the discharge of nearly 11 milion gallons of crude oil into the pristine bay. Some 14, 000 fishing professionals and other business sued Exxon, claiming that they had lost significant amounts of money and their way of life was changed due to Exxon's negligence. They sought several billions dollars of damages. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the state also filed criminal charges against Exxon claiming violations of federal and state laws. The ship captain was also charged with operating a ship under the influence of alcohol. Questions are:
1. What will be the remedy if the fishing professionals and other business win their lawsuit?
2. Is it civil or criminal?
3. What might be the result of the EPA action? The action against the captain?
4. ARe these civil or criminal castes?
