We retained a lawyer in California to look into taking legal action against a client for breach of contract. We paid the retainer fee in March 2000 as requested and have not heard from him since. We have written in July to request information on the status, and still no answer in November. What is our recourse to find out what he has done for the payment made.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Contact the California Bar association (los angeles or san francisco) and file a complaint against him.

OR, hire another lawyer.

Either way, if you sit on your claim for breach of contract (why you want to lawyer), the statute of limitations may run out and you will be stuck. SO your best bet, call the bar association and go from there.
