ATV Club

Kentucky: My friends have started an ATV Club and plan to file as a not for profit corporation. We are looking at 501a(7) IRS filing for a recreation club. May we be a not for profit corporation without filing for the tax free status. If we did not, how would we be considered for tax purposes.
