May a prospective employer ask questions during an interview that include:

"How much longer do you plan to work?" and "When do you plan to retire?"

I am by physical observation over age 40 (actually 55), and am competing against a much younger woman with less qualifications for a senior managerial postion. These questions were asked by one interviewer involved in the hiring decision.

Yes.... and yes. It only depends on what they do, if anything, with your answers as to whether they discriminate due to age.
