A young man from Virginia suffering from manic/deppression stole a vehicle in Virginia (while manic) and drove it to Georgia. His condition has now swung to depression (suicidal) and he wants to turn himself in and seek mental healthcare. How should he do this?

Pick up the phone and call the police.

Is he turning himself in just to get the health care? If he is it is a big mistake because you don't get good mental health care in jail or prison!

All they really do is tie you up so you can't hurt yourself. You can do that to him at home. I Know in AZ if you walked into a Charter Behavioral Hospital and told them you were suicidal, they would take you in whether you had insurance or not, at least for 48 hrs. There's got to be some kind of hospital like that in GA

Hey, hey, hey, people. The guy is a Georgia Dufus idiot. Why are you wasting your time trying to save "one of them"?

Geez, let it go.

The procedure is pretty similar in all states. They’ll put him first on 48h suicidal watch and if he still pose treat to himself, the time would be extended.

There's a couple of different ways this can go in Georgia. The police have the option of taking him to the ER for a menal evaluation. The docs there will decide whether or not to 1013 him. Then the sheriff will take him to one of the state mental hospitals if he doesn't have insurance.

The stolen car is crucial, because the police in Georgia do not have the legal authority to take a person into custody for merely being suicidal.

In order for a Georgia LEO to take a person into custody for a mental issue, he has to have a signed order from a doctor or mansters level or high mental health professional, a lay affidavit from a probate court judge, or probable cause to believe the person committed a penal offense and probable caust to believe that he is mentally ill.

Of course, he could consent to go to any ER, where the ER doc can sign the 1013 without the police getting involved.
