What is the name of your state? CA

We've owned our home since 1999. While recently measuring the property and home for a proposed second story, we've discovered that someone owns a 5 foot wide strip of land on one side of our property. This was never disclosed to us, when we bought the house. There is a large brick patio on the side of the house in question, which was placed there by the previous owners. How do we find out who the owner is of this 5ft. strip, and can we force them to sell it to us? The fence and patio, which have been in place for many years before we bought the house, clearly are built over this footage in question. Is there some law that would give us this land automatically, since it is and was part of this home before we purchased it?

Thanks.

Q: How do we find out who the owner is of this 5ft. strip?

A: Run a title search and get a new survey. Post back with results.
