This question is for a relative. Job performance became eratic due to mental illness. He had disability insurance through the job and his psychiatrist was going to get paperwork in for going on disability. However, the doctor took his time and the employer fired him. The mental illness that caused him problems on the job also caused him problems taking care of doing anything about anything! Finally, several months later, he applied for SSDI. Though many applications for SSDI due to mental illness are rejected his was approved first time and the disability dated back to the time of his employment.

The question. He worked at the job quite some time contributing to disability insurance and the reason for his termination was because of not being able to do his job due to his disability. Could he be eligible for disability insurance even though he did not have the mental capability to follow up on the paperwork required at the time? What is the name of your state?
