JOINT LEGAL CUSTODY - a form of custody of minor children in which the parents share the responsibilities and major decision-making related to the child.


SOLE CUSTODY - a form of custody in which one parent is awarded both physical and legal custody.

In other words, with joint legal custody the non custodial parent should be consulted regarding major decisions concerning the child(ren). Not neccesarily will their wishes be fulfilled, but their input on the issue should be respected. Final decisions normally are made by the custodial parent.

Sole custody: The non custodial parent need not be contacted regarding major decisions, and most everything regarding the children is done without them or their input.
