What is the name of your state? New York

If a lawyer decides to not represent you as a client any longer and he has in his possesion your original will and other legal papers how can these be returned to you? Does he automatically have to send them to you, or do you have to hire another lawyer to receive them for you? It's a long sad story and I just need to know the correct procedure to reclaim pertinent personal paperwork. Yikes! Thanks.
