No Kneeling Permanently???

Injured while at work, a knee injury. Had the knee surgery, therapy, the whole nine yards. I am better, but my doctor will not take me off of the no kneeling permanently restriction. So, now my job is telling me that i cannot come back to work even though i can do 8 out of the 9 functions of my job, because of the word "permanently" written on my restrictions. Is this legal? Can they take my job, my benefits and my senority away, even if the injury was not my fault? I am in Maryland.
