What is the name of your state? Hi I live in Wisconsin.
My mother is 86 and I provide over 50% of her income so I qualify to take her as an elder dependent on my taxes. She has very limited assets yet too much to qualify for medicaid. My question is on medical liabilty. If I claim her as a dependent - am I (and my assets) liable for payment of future medical bills and or nursing home care? How can I legally protect myself?

No, unless you make yourself liable for her bills.

Never sign anything that will make you the guarantor.
